"Do professors and journalists make their own rules? This only makes sense if you think they have complete mind control over elites, politicians, and the masses." you dont understand the difference between persuasion, influence and direct command or rule-making enforcement, you confuse these things, assuming that power looks the way it does in media representation in the form of an evil villain or something. you also quote "empirics" which is just twitter polls about how vaguely partisan certain news outlets are as an "objective counterproof" to the concept of a cathedral which isnt a directly surveyable phenomenon, making the data look arbitrary in comparison. very embarrassing article, please fix everything about yourself, it makes me recoil in cringe just imagining that whenever i talk about the cathedral itll be in group with your article.

Ideas don't gain prominence amongst large institutions because they're true, but because they allow one to exert power. The directing of power is fundamental to the survival and effectiveness of any large institution.

That is why Leftism will always be popular amongst those who peddle ideas in these places. It is an ideology that equips and justifies it's devotees to rise to the top of institutions.

The whole Left/Right axis comes from the French Revolution.

Those on the Right, who wanted to preserved the monarchy, were outcompeted by those on the Left, who wanted a more radical revolution.

The French king was not beheaded because the Left's ideas were more "true" than the Right. The king was beheaded because the Left was more ruthless and power hungry. The radicals were not held back by any ideas of precedence or tradition and were able to outmaneuver the other side.

Don't see how improved data and science reverse anything?
